Every Thursday at 6pm ET, I play D&D 4e solo with a lot of help from the community. We are currently playing through the first D&D 4e adventure module, Keep on the Shadowfell.
Recap
Having fully rested from their ordeal with the kobolds, the party decided to head out in search of their friend Douven Staul. According to Eilian the Old in Winterhaven, he gave Douven directions to an old burial site that Douven had been asking about. He has not heard from Douven since. He gives the party the same directions.
Upon arriving at the site, the party found Douven tied up and gagged by a group of goblins. There was a brief negotiation, but when it became clear that their were being deceived, the party pulled their weapons.
In the first round, the unfortunate halfling that was standing near the party took the full brunt of the attacks from the group as combat got underway.
The Drakes guarding the pit were ordered by the Gnome Skulk to attack and they charged immediately to edge of the pit and waited for the party to get within range.
The Human Rabble took an end-around and tried to attack the party from the north—except for the one that Elara took out with a magic missile.
The second round is where things got interesting. Lyra jumped on the dead halfling and surfed it down into the pit like Legolas at Helm’s Deep. She landed right on top of one of the drakes. Not to be outdone, Keldrek jumped into the pit and landed on the head of the other drake.
Meanwhile, Haldor took up a position to finish off the human rabble, but, unfortunately, they were a little too quick for his aging body and he came up empty each time. Elara did her part and took out one of them for him.
In the third round, Lyra pressed her advantage and finished off the drake. She then took a chance and moved toward the gnome skulk that was leading this clan.
Keldrek attacked his foe and then moved into a flanking position so that he and Lyra would be at an advantage to take care of the second drake.
At the edge of the burial pit, Haldor continued to struggle with the human rabble. Even summoning his action point, he could not score a single hit.
The fourth round represented the last desperate hope for the enemies.
The gnome used its fade away and then tried to slip away from danger, but Lyra was having none of it. She got herself in a position to flank the other drake and finished it off before turning her attention to the gnome.
Frustrated at Haldor’s lack of success against the rabble, Elara tossed a couple magic missiles over his shoulder and finished off the minions once and for all. Haldor yelled something to the effect of, “I had them right where I wanted them!” But Elara paid him no mind.
The final round was all Lyra. She attacked the gnome and pulled it into a position where it was flanked by Keldrek. She then dealt a final blow to defeat it once and for all.
Whatever stories you might hear from Keldrek and Haldor, this was Lyra’s fight from start to finish.
Douven gave them a locket and then scurried off.
Interlude
The party returned to Winterhaven and conversed with the townsfolk about some goblin activity around the ancient keep. A local sage named Valthrun the Prescient informed them of an ancient gate that was sealed ages ago to keep out evil creatures. He believes that Kalarel is seeking to open this rift and must be stopped.
Enter our heroes who will take their first steps into the Keep on the Shadowfell.
Join me Thursday at 6pm ET to help the party in their quest.
