Dungeon Lore
Last week I announced that I was going to be releasing a monthly PDF magazine called Dungeon Lore. This publication is dedicated to the 4e style of play that I started with and that I still love.
The magazine is included with a paid subscription to the journal, but since this is the first issue, I am giving this one away to ALL subscribers for a limited time. Click the link below to get your copy, and please don’t forget to leave a review.
In this first issue I talk about revitalizing Project 5.4 with a new purpose focused on a 4e style of play, share my thoughts on a couple of interesting opinions from the community, and, best of all, present the first three encounters as part of the 2024 dungeon crawl, The Mines of Kashtel Gale.
Please spread the word and let me know your feedback.
Monster Monday
This journal entry is about looking to the future. So this week I wanted a monster that had a cool feature involving vision. I had several options, but decided to go with the Basilisk. Its petrifying gaze can make for a very bad day.
Basilisk encounter idea…
Medium encounter for five 2nd-level characters (700 XP)
The party enters a small farming community where the residents appear quite distressed. The villagers believe that a basilisk has taken residence in the nearby caves. It has been turning wild animals and, worse, their livestock to stone. They plead with the adventurers to help. If pressed, the villagers can collect 100 gold as a reward.
Once they agree to help the village, the party is provided with a map to an ancient cave where they believe the basilisk is living.
Lighting
The cavern is filled with bioluminescent fungi which glows and provides bright light throughout the entire cavern.
Pool
The cavern contains a pool of natural spring water. The water is cold but only a foot deep. Moving through the water is difficult terrain.
The basilisk will be alerted if any creature moves through the pool.
Stalagmites and Stalactites
These provide cover for creatures hiding behind them. They are difficult terrain for a medium or smaller creature to pass around them.
Tactics
Basilisk Uses its bite if in melee, but otherwise moves behind the obstacles in order to force the party to look at it so it can use its petrifying gaze.
If it becomes wounded (half max HP), then it gives up making attempts to use petrifying gaze and charges in to attack with its bite.
It fights to the death.
Treasure
After searching the cavern for 30 minutes, the party discovers 2d12 gold and a magic item.
